M IS AN 82 YEAR OLD WIDOW
whose daughter lives with her in the family home. M's daughter
works full time and juggles her work with taking care of the
house -- yard work, repairs and spring cleaning. The daughter
purchased a subscription to give her mother transportation
during the day for shopping trips and as help for herself
in the yard. The first referral they requested was for someone
to clean up accumulated leaves and to trim back overgrown
bushes.
S IS 78 YEARS OLD AND RECENTLY
MOVED from a large house to a
condo. Her only child, a daughter, lives overseas with her
husband and small child. In February S was in the hospital
and was not able to get her financial records organized for
filing her tax returns. She had to file for an extension for
the first time in her life. S also has a growing pile of statements
from Medicare and bills from the hospital and doctors. S requested
the help of a daily money manager to work on the accumulated
paperwork. The money manager organized the papers and made
phone calls, when necessary, to straighten out the insurance
bills.
THE SMITHS ARE A COUPLE IN
THEIR LATE 70s who have been living
in the same house for almost 50 years. A couple of times they
tried to get repairs done but found that many handymen won't
deal with a list of small jobs. They are also concerned about
who comes into their home and are worried about being "scammed."
The Smiths requested a handyman to power wash and repaint
an outside deck, fix a leaking toilet seal and replace the
lock on an outside door.
THE JONES HAVE TWO ADULT CHILDREN,
one son who live in Syracuse, NY and a daughter living in
Wilmington, DE. Mr. Jones is 85 and in the hospital recovering
from major surgery. The children have been staying with Mrs.
Jones through the surgery but have to return to their jobs.
Mrs. Jones will be using the four hours of free homemaking
time for trips to and from the hospital to see her husband.
She using the help of the house cleaner who is washing windows,
cleaning under furniture and removing trash accumulated during
the winter. Mrs. Jones has the security of knowing that if
anything breaks in the house while her husband is recovering,
she can call Shoreline Helping Hands for help. Their children
are comforted in knowing that their mother has local support.
